Introduction to Biblical Languages & Tools (IBLT)

This course is taught at JU to acquaint students with tools to study Hebrew and Greek on a non-technical level.  It involves the use of concordances, dictionaries, lexicons, commentaries and other resources.  The materials here are relevant to the Greek portion of that class.

Pre-Greek

First year Greek is probably the hardest course on campus (certainly the most feared!).  It takes you from kindergarten to high school graduate in one year.  Because of the amount of vocabulary (over 400 words) and the other necessary memory work, it is time consuming.  Because of this, I recommend students start learning during the summer before the course.  Some suggestions are made on this page.  For students who want to begin in ernest, see the link to 1st Year Greek.  All the lecture material is posted there.  Get your Mounce grammar and workbook and get started!

1st Year Greek

Anyone worldwide can learn Greek with these free resources.  All that is needed is the Mounce grammar and workbook.  The lectures posted here are narrated as they are in class.  It is always best if you have someone to help you answer questions regarding the workbook, but a motivated person can make substantial progress with just the material posted.

The material here is intended initially to fortify students in my first year course.  It allows for access to lecture in case you are absent, off campus, or need to review.  The lecture material is made with Powerpoint and saved in MHT format (see the notes above the table for instructions).

Tweener Greek

What should I do to prepare for second year Greek?  During the summer you will have twelve weeks off and you'll get very, very rusty if you're not careful!  (Just remember how rusty you were after a three-week Christmas break).  The absolute BEST thing you can do is read Greek.  Here are some tips.

Hopefully, a student who has completed two years of Greek is now equipped and motivated to read the Greek bible.  This page provides some ideas based upon experience to fortify and expand the student's grasp of Greek. Explore it and make your own recommendations by e-mailing me.

Second-year Greek is mostly translation with introduction to special tools: the United Bible Societies Greek New Testament, textual variants, the history of textual transmission, lexicons, and grammar review.
